What Is Orton Gillingham

Orton Gillingham is a structured, individualized and multi-sensory teaching approach to help struggling readers and writers. The Orton Gillingham method focuses on teaching the connections between letters and sounds. This teaching approach breaks down reading and spelling into smaller skills and builds on them over time.

  • What is the goal?
The primary goal is to teach students to read and write at word level while also developing comprehension.
  • Who is it for?
Orton Gillingham was designed for students with reading disabilities with an emphasis on dyslexia. However, this teaching method is effective for ALL learners and age groups.
  • Does it work?
Orton Gillingham is a well-regarded research-based approach that has proven to be beneficial for struggling readers. This technique is effective because of the emphasis placed on individualized, structured learning.
  • Why does it work?
Each lesson is based on the students’ strengths and weaknesses to help master individual skills. OG is especially effective for students with dyslexia because dyslexia varies greatly from person to person.
  • Why online?
Originally, the OG method was primarily taught in person but many teachers have adapted to using technology over the past year. Being online keeps students engaged by using more creative resources such as online games and tools.
